January 2025 was a busy and thought-provoking month for those involved in any layer of AI infrastructure. Within a few days, three separate events — the last of which sent shockwaves through the industry — raised deep questions about the global expansion of AI, its true value and its need for more data center capacity.
It was the third of these events, the launch of DeepSeek’s new V3 (language focus) and R1 (reasoning) models, and the subsequent market crash, that most unnerved the global AI community.
