RECAP | WEBINAR | The Coming Data Center Energy Crisis: Fact or Fiction [REPLAY]
Fears over a shortage of power or a big rise in prices in certain geographies may be well founded, this discussion suggests. But huge savings in energy are still possible for most, which could alleviate the problem.
In the Uptime Institute webinar "The coming data center energy crisis – Fact or fiction?” Dr. Rabih Bashroush of the University of East London and Andy Lawrence, executive director of Research at the Uptime Institute, discussed some surprising and at times alarming facts about the demand for data center energy in the coming years. Dr. Bashroush, a specialist in data center energy use and the coordinator of the Eureca project (a project to help European public sector data centers and IT become more efficient), put the energy used by Bitcoin miners in context, suggesting that already very high consumption for blockchain applications could escalate dramatically in the years ahead. This, coupled with growing demand for energy for 5G, analytics, AI, and IoT applications and by electric and autonomous vehicles, could amount to a perfect storm, just as the grid itself becomes less stable. Operators were given advice on mitigation strategies.
In the webinar, Andy Lawrence and Dr. Bashroush also discussed strategies for reducing energy use. Data was shown that points to the huge savings possible by pursuing early hardware refresh strategies and virtualization along with low PUEs.
