RECAP | ROUNDTABLE | Saving Cost and Time Using PFM Construction

An October 30th, 2018, Inside Track roundtable explored why prefabricated modular construction (PFM) remains a topic of interest in the data center community. Led by Kevin Heslin, chief editor, Uptime Institute, and Daniel Bizo, principal analyst, 451Research, the roundtable covered a variety of topics related to the suitability of PFM facilities for different applications.

Interestingly, the conversation focused on two geographies, with one participant keying in on qualities of PFM construction that helped them gain acceptance in Asia and another focused on the data center industry in Lisbon, Portugal.

Daniel Bizo quickly listed some of the features of PFM projects that tended to make them suitable in space-constrained and highly-regulated environments. These include speed to market and repeatability, so that the products become familiar to AHJs.

He also noted that vendors find it easier to meet tight SLAs in areas where space is constrained because of high volume, such as London, where vendors have established presences to be near existing clients.
