RECAP | ROUNDTABLE | AIRs: Using Data to Identify the Causes of Outages
Uptime Institute’s November 11 Inside Track roundtable, AIRs: Using Data to Identify the Causes of Outages, included a lengthy analysis of how one telecom provider uses data to identify points of failure, adjust maintenance schedules, manage procedures and improve operations. As part of his discussion, he specifically talked about generator battery failure and generator block heaters.
As AIRs coordinator Juan Orozco, an Uptime Institute consultant, applauded this use of data, following up with more questions about data collection and categorization.
The timing and pace of the session allowed for an in-depth discussion of root-cause analysis, with the telecom participant sharing step by step procedures. He noted that some incidents require a greater degree of analysis than others, based on the components involved and their importance to operations.
The large telecom operator includes a wide variety of facilities, with many of them being simple direct current operations. This, he noted, meant that many of his facilities were simple operations compared to data centers. The simplicity eliminated many opportunities for human error, he said.
Toward the end of the session, the conversation turned to the 2018 AIRs results. The session ended as Orozco reached the meat of the results, so Uptime Institute will be sending the findings to participants and responding to questions.
