Direct liquid cooling shows promise, but challenges persist
With rising rack densities and the advent of power-hungry chips, data center operators will increasingly grapple with the challenge of finding the right balance in cooling performance, energy efficiency and sustainability. Direct liquid cooling (DLC) of IT hardware is poised to displace air cooling as the dominant approach — but first it needs to overcome the hurdles around standardization and cost. The Uptime Institute Cooling Systems Survey 2023 collects data center operators’ experiences with DLC, as well as their objectives and their concerns.
The Uptime Institute Cooling Systems Survey 2023, conducted online in February and March 2023, had more than 800 respondents. This report highlights some of the findings.
