At the end of September 2026, the internet was abuzz with the news of a new AI model called Jev, developed by early-stage startup TypeSafe AI. The headlines suggested that Jev was cheaper, faster and more efficient than existing large language models (LLMs), and that it would compete with "frontier" models by OpenAI and Anthropic. The team at TypeSafe supposedly managed to eliminate hallucinations and make AI outputs deterministic — similarly to conventional program code.
On closer examination, many claims made about Jev in the media do not stand up to scrutiny: it cannot be used as a drop-in replacement for conventional LLMs, although it can perform some tasks better. And despite the claims of efficiency, it will not reduce the infrastructure needs for AI workloads in a meaningful way.
