AI infrastructure ambitions will be cut down to size

In late 2024, Uptime Intelligence predicted that only a quarter of the total power of announced hyperscale-sized data center campuses would eventually be used (see Hyperscale data center plans at unsustainable levels). We expect only half of the total power capacity to be built; and we also expect IT to use only half of the provisioned power.

Our conservative stance is based on an analysis of supersize campus proposals (any project calling for more than 100 MW of IT load capacity), some of which aspire to reach multiple gigawatt capacities. Often, these campus proposals are speculative and redundant as they are competing for a shared pool of large IT infrastructure customers.
