The number of proposals for hyperscale-size data centers in 2024 is at its highest level. Uptime Institute has tracked 122 projects and proposals this year so far, compared with 86 in the three years from 2021 to 2023. If all proposals reached their full ambitions for planned power capacity, they would consume 63,244 MW (63.2 GW) of power — a staggering 2% of the world's energy. (see Table 1).
Uptime expects that most hyperscale-size data centers that are built eventually will achieve 25% of their planned power capacity — see Looking ahead (realistically) below. The power required would still be more than double that which had been proposed in the previous three years combined.
