RECAP | North America Regional Member Briefing - Q3 2020

Uptime Institute conducted a live virtual online briefing for members primarily in North America on 24 September 2020. Thank you to all the folks that attended the briefing! We had a really great turnout of 64 members from 104 registered.

The following was the agenda followed for the briefing. The link to the presentations and the audio/video from the event is displayed below.

Uptime Institute Survey Analysis – North America
Uptime Institute announced the results of its annual global data center survey in July/August, revealing trends on workloads, density, efficiency, availability and staffing. In this session, Andy Lawrence, Executive Director of Research for Uptime Institute, will provide further analysis of the findings, with a focus on how and why North American data center operators differ from their counterparts elsewhere. In addition, he will review some of the recent findings from the designer/supplier survey.

Automation and Management: Where next?
Data center managers and operators are often cautious about automation and data center management systems. On one hand, these systems can be costly, difficult to implement and introduce complexity. On the other, well implemented systems can help to improve efficiency, reduce failures, and improve overall management control. Such systems can also enable remote operations, with fewer staff - important in the pandemic/post pandemic world. In this panel discussion, lead by Andy Lawrence, we’ll discuss some of the issues of deployment with operators.
Panelist:
Rhonda Ascierto, VP Research, Uptime Institute
Sumit Gupta, VP of AI Strategy &CTO, IBM Data and AI
Zahl Limbuwala, Exec. Dir. Strategy & Market Enablement, Data Center Solutions, CBRE

Best-In-Class Data Center Provisioning at Scale
Rhonda Ascierto, VP Uptime Institute Research. In recent years, there has been a revolution in data center construction. Highly efficient, large-scale data centers are being provisioned faster and more cheaply than ever before, enabling a rapid build-out of IT and cloud capacity. Uptime Institute has researched this area by analyzing data points from real-world projects and by investigating novel approaches used by builders, including the use of prefabricated components to reduce data center provisioning times and costs. This presentation reviews the latest research into best practices and best-in-class provisioning: Which technologies and processes are being used? What are the best-achievable costs, efficiencies and provisioning times?
