Digital EOPs: the appliance of science

Data center operations teams are guided by sets of written procedures that need to be followed to the letter. The importance of clear and concise information is especially vital in emergency situations, when the actions of data center staff are dictated by emergency operating procedures (EOPs). Some operators believe that converting method of procedure (MOP), standard operating procedure (SOP) and EOP documents into digital files or applications is an effective solution to overcoming training gaps and ensuring the implementation of up-to-date processes.

Uptime Intelligence has previously outlined actionable steps for improving physical, printed copies of EOPs in line with cognitive psychology principles (see Effective EOPs: how cognitive science can help) — however, digital interfaces present new, often overlooked variables that need consideration. While standards for lettering, typography and imagery still apply to on-screen content, switching to a digital medium can impact procedure effectiveness on both cognitive and behavioral levels.
