Some researchers and energy experts have promoted "flexible interconnection" agreements to speed up the connection of large data centers to the grid. Under these agreements, operators pledge to remove their electrical load from the grid during the 100-400 highest-demand hours each year, while the grid supplies power for the remaining hours.
Offering a data center load as a demand response asset may accelerate a grid connection. However, the number of facilities that can benefit from this approach will be limited by grid region and will depend on factors such as project size, the quantity of load available for demand response, grid configuration, and the size of the grid demand peak.
