Capacity expands rapidly, but complexity is challenging

Data center capacities continued to show strong growth in 2023, driven by increasing demand for compute. Most enterprises use a hybrid approach (on- and off-premises environments) for their workloads to adapt to changing capacity requirements. However, results from the Uptime Institute Capacity Trends and Cloud Survey 2023 reveal that some operators are also rebalancing their usage of public cloud and moving certain applications and workloads back on-premises. This rebalancing is being driven by the growing complexity of hybrid environments, which can result in unexpectedly high cloud costs, IT performance issues and system downtime. Limitations in cloud operations (CloudOps) capabilities also expose technology and skills gaps. Nonetheless, hybrid strategies remain a priority.

The Uptime Institute Capacity Trends and Cloud Survey 2023, conducted online in October and November 2023, had more than 350 end-user respondents. This report highlights some of the findings.
