Cooling systems: balancing cost, energy and water use

Data center cooling systems have evolved from facility-specific designs to engineered, modular systems. Both air-cooled and water-cooled systems offer full economization, low PUEs and comparable total cost of ownership over the facility’s lifespan — which can last over 20 years.

The choice of cooling system will depend on climatic conditions, water availability, the types of IT space cooling deployed, IT space temperature specifications and the specifics of the facility’s sustainability strategy. Data center heat reuse requirements can disrupt or transform how operators approach data center cooling.
