Water is a local issue: site selection and facility design

Water consumption has become a critical element of a data center’s sustainability strategy. It is a local issue dependent on water availability, the safe water withdrawal rate for the watershed, climatic conditions and competition for the water resource among other water users at the location.

The water use profile of a data center is detrmined by the location and the deployed cooling system technology. In water-rich locations, a water-cooled heat exchange system likely offers the most efficient cooling system. In locations that suffer water stress or water scarcity, an air-cooled system is likely the best choice.
