Network advisory: fire risk management

Although fires in the data center - or at least, in the white space - are relatively rare, all data centers contain complex electrical systems whose malfunction could cause a fire. The threat posed by fire is escalating, though, as energy-dense lithium ion (li-ion) batteries are being deployed for backup purposes in battery rooms and even in servers, raising the risk of catastrophic thermal runaway events.

This is an issue across the data center industry, as the 100 views of a recent Inside Track question on li-ion risks will attest. Working from discussions with members and senior Uptime staff, Uptime has developed some principles for data center fire risk management. Now, we are eager to share these perspectives, and understand how the Uptime community approaches - and contains - fire risk in the data center.
